Biophilia: / bio fi li a /
for etymology BIO from gr. -βίος «living» and FILIA filìa from gr. ϕιλία "love, tendency, affinity"
Use and evolution of the term Biophilia over the years
1864 - term already attested in the field of phrenology, appears in "Lessons of phrenology" on page 107 in a publication of the Tipografia G. Ferrari (Parma).
1964 - The first to use this term is Enric Fromm in the book "Heart of Man, Its Genius for Good and Evil", translated into Italian with "Psychoanalysis of love" with subtitle "Necrophilia and biophilia in man".
1984 - Biophilia becomes common as a scientific hypothesis proposed by the American scientist Edward Wilson, defined as Darwin's natural heir, who wrote "Biophilia", a book that won two Pulitzer Prizes. He defines it as "innate tendency to focus one's interest on life and vital processes".
1993 - Wilson suggests biophilia is attributable to a set of phylogenetically adaptive learning rules, each of which can be studied individually.
2002 - Wilson again proposes a new definition: "biophilia is the innate tendency to focus our attention on life forms and everything that reminds them and in some circumstances to become emotionally affiliated with them (fascination)".
Fascination - according to Kaplan Environmental Psychologist - is an involuntary attention, which does not stay and allows regenerating functions. Also according to Ulrich nature would have the ability to fascinate the human being allowing him to rest and regenerate direct attention which is tiring and produces hostile behaviors.
